Intro to Part Two and Ch. 3 (State and Empire)
Intro to Part Two:
Intro to Part two explains how an empire begins. Each empire has their own cultures depending on the location. There is the Eurasian Empire, the Roman Empire, the China dynasties, and Greece. That have all been part of major empires that soon collapsed. All empires ended up collapsing, but its what they left behind that is remembered. The memories weren't always so good from the empires past. Some of it was very bloody and there was lots of violence.
Chapter 3
The Persian and Greek Empires
Chapter 3 compared many different large empires. The first he compared the Persians to the Greeks. The Persian empire was one of the biggest and impressive world empires. They were very passionate about monarchy and when a king died they did many unreasonable things. They would start fires and shave their heads. The monarchs were very brutal as they would execute any people that were in their way. The Greece Empire wasn't as large as the Persian empire, but they both left big legacies. The Greek civilizations were of Athens, Sparta, Plato, Aristotle, and Zeus and Apollo. They melted metals and Plato declared that "all the rich soil has melted away leaving a country of skin and bone"(111). This shows that many didn't agree with how the neighbors were running things.
The Roman and Chinese Empires
Two other empires flourished around the same time as the Greeks and Persians. The Roman Empire began as small city state and became a large Imperial state. Romans did not have a monarchy and established a public where the patricians dominated. They controlled their people with a written code. The Roman Empire encompassed the Mediterranean. As the empire grew, Men were seen as masculine and dominant. They had complete control over women and children. The Chinese Empire was made in order to re-create something old and make it better. The Great Wall of china was created, but also many bad things led to the fall of this empire. Shihuangdi's practices led to its fall, he created way to many rules and things that the Empire could not catch up.
