Chapter 4

Chapter 4 (Culture & Religion) 

China was searching for order because the Zhou Dynasty was weakening. There was much violence and breakout between the Chinese people. One way the Chinese people tried to fix these problems was by starting legalism. The legalist thinkers set up new rules and laws and tried to gain order in the societies. Confucius was someone who believed he could solve all of China's problems. He believed that if the "superior party in each of these relationships behaved sincerity, benevolence, and genuine concern for others, then the inferior party would be motivated to respond with deference and obedience"(152). He believed that human virtues could fix the problems china was facing. His thinking's became heavily known in China and many people listened to him. The Yin and Yang symbol was created and it expressed beliefs of the unity of opposites. Confucius may have had a large impact on this creation because of all his philosophies he developed. On the other hand, India was very attentive to Gods and spirits as they believed in Buddha. Buddha taught a small community about what he has learned. Much of his teachings reflected the Hindu tradition and the belief that "ordinary life in an illusion"(160).

Chapter 2 First Civilizations

One of the first civilizations was Mesopotamia. The Mesopotamia River was un-predictable and many people in the city had a scare of flooding. Another major city that emerged was Notre Chico where twenty-five urban centers emerged and it was one of the largest. Many archeologists uncovered a 5,000 year old quipu. The Indus Valley was far beyond urban planning. They knew had to make ovens made of mud-bricks and developed their own toilets and baths. They created good hygiene for their people. Another interesting thing about the Indus Valley was that they had no hierarchy. During the Ancient period social hierarchy was developing and many people wanted to gain power and high status. Nevertheless, the Indus Valley was still thriving without it. There was also Hierarchies between Men and Women. Women were just seen from their relationship with their man. Chapter 3 Documents

Chapter 3 Documents: Greek Historians on Persia and Egypt: The Persians had many different types of rituals they would commonly do. They did not believe in God, but made many sacrifices to Zeus. They wear Egyptian armor and wear clothing like Medes. Another interesting custom they do is when they meet someone of equal status on the street they kiss them on the lips, but when the status is not equal they kiss on the cheek. The Egyptians had many great qualities. They had beautiful rivers and buildings and the women had many fulfilling jobs. The women were involved in market and trade while the men were at home weaving on the loom. Egyptians always had animals with them and they wrote from right to left instead of left to right.
